International Delegation in Mexico to Assess Human Rights

An international delegation of European parliamentarians, European organizations, and civil society representatives is in Mexico from this Wednesday until November 7 to learn about the situation of human rights, human rights defenders, and peace in the country. According to a statement, the visit aims to strengthen political dialogue and international cooperation between Mexico and the European Union, as well as to highlight the challenges in migration, freedom of the press, and the protection of human rights defenders. The delegation will hold meetings with legislators, members of the Supreme Court of Justice, the Ministry of the Interior, the Attorney General's Office, the National Search Commission, and the Executive Commission for Assistance to Victims, as well as with civil society organizations and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights in Mexico. The itinerary includes a visit to Tapachula, Chiapas, to learn about the situation of migrants and international protection applicants, as well as meetings with criminalized defenders in San Juan Cancuc and with relatives of arbitrarily detained persons. The delegation will also address the case of Kenia Hernández, an Amuzgo defender imprisoned in the State of Mexico. The platform warned that since 2023, at least 47 human rights defenders and 14 journalists have been killed, possibly in relation to their work. Of these, 16 had protective measures at the time of their death. In the case of women defenders, 18 have been killed, half of them being missing persons searchers, according to the Mesoamerican Initiative of Women Human Rights Defenders. The results of the mission will be presented on November 6 in Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Chiapas, and subsequently before European authorities. EFE
